The National Strategy on Community Safety and Crime Prevention supports Canadians who want to make their communities safer. It helps increase individual and community safety by providing Canadians with the knowledge, skills and resources they need to undertake community-based solutions to crime. It also helps communities share information and increase public awareness and support for effective approaches to crime prevention.
Phase I of the National Strategy, launched in 1994, established the National Crime Prevention Council *pdf (1994-1997) and provided the framework for federal crime prevention efforts. Phase II of the Strategy, launched on June 2, 1998, includes $32 million a year — for five years — in federal funding for crime prevention initiatives.
